Privacy Policy

Who I am:

This website is https://westofmars.com

What personal data I collect, and why I collect it:
Comments

When visitors leave comments on the site, I collect the data shown in the comments form, and also the visitor’s IP address and browser user agent string to help spam detection.

An anonymized string created from your email address (also called a hash) may be provided to the Gravatar service to see if you are using it. The Gravatar service privacy policy is available here: https://automattic.com/privacy/. After approval of your comment, your profile picture is visible to the public in the context of your comment.

Media
If you upload images to any website, you should avoid uploading images with embedded location data (EXIF GPS) included. Anyone who sees it can download and extract any location data from it. Don’t be that person who gets stalked ’cause you have location services on.

Cookies
If you leave a comment on my site, your name, email address, and website may be saved in cookies. These are for your convenience and so that you don’t have to fill in your details again when you leave another comment. These cookies will last for one year. Make use of this convenience and comment often!

Embedded Content from Other Sites:
Articles on this site may include embedded content (e.g. videos, images, articles, etc.). Embedded content from other websites behaves in the exact same way as if the visitor has visited the other website.

These websites may collect data about you, use cookies, embed additional third-party tracking, and monitor your interaction with that embedded content, including tracing your interaction with the embedded content if you have an account and are logged in to that website.

Analytics
Who we share your data with

Your data is shared with no one. I don’t sell, rent, or lend out your information; it’s yours, after all. The only time your information will leave my hands is if I am required by law to share it for some reason (like if you were a cyber bully, and I needed to share your IP address with law enforcement. But you’re not, so we’re cool.).

How long I retain your data

If you leave a comment, the comment and its metadata are retained indefinitely. This is so I can recognize and approve any follow-up comments automatically instead of holding them in a moderation queue.

For users who use my contact forms, I may keep your email on file for future conversations. I won’t send you mailing lists or any correspondence outside of the scope of what we’ve already talked about. Then again, I’m such a lousy e-mail correspondent that you probably won’t hear from me regardless of whether or not I have anything to say to you.

What rights you have over your data

If you have left comments here at West of Mars, you can request to receive an exported file of the personal data I hold about you, including any data you have provided. You can also request that I erase any personal data I hold about you. This does not include any data I am obligated to keep for administrative, legal, or security purposes.

Where I send your data:
Visitor comments may be checked through an automated spam detection service.

If you need my physical address, let me know and I’ll release it on a case-by-case basis. It’s all about staying safe, right?
