Thursday Thirteen: I Saw Him From Afar

Facebooktwitterredditpinterestlinkedinmail

Ever notice how you can pick out a friend’s back across a crowded room, even if everyone in the room’s wearing the same uniform?

It’s the hair

Color

Style

Their posture

Shoulders up, chest lifted

Shoulders in

Hips canted to one side

The set of the jaw, or the jawline itself

Do they talk with their hands?

Do they fidget?

Favor one leg?

If they’re wearing heels, do they rock one foot forward and anchor that heel into the ground?

Attitude.

Think about it. What makes you recognize someone? What lets your friends recognize you?

Hmmm… Nope. I’ve never been able to do that, but maybe someday.
Most often I identify people by their voice, so yes, things can get a little awkward if they don’t speak first. However, I also know a few highly odorous people who I can almost always identify by scent long before they’re near enough to speak to me.

How do people recognize me? Well, if nothing else, the guide dog tends to be a pretty big giveaway. 🙂

People spot me in a crowd because I’m blonde and 6’2″
lol I think hair color and body type from the back.
    Fun list. Happy T13!

People spot me in a crowd because I’m blonde and 6’2″ lol To spot someone in a crowd? I’d say hair color, body type and what they’re wearing.
    Fun list!
    Happy T13!

I can usually recognize friends and family in a crowd regardless what they are wearing, especially my girls. I can tell by how they move their body mostly.

I don’t know about other people, but I’m sure with Trev it’s the green hair.

Yes! Sometimes you can spot them by their habits and body language, but sometimes you just know. An invisible connection pulls taut. Anyway, Happy TT!

It’s familiarity. It’s aura. It’s everything you listed here and more.

I’m not so great a recognizing people across the room, except for my child who I can pick out of any crowd (thank goodness).

Well, I have a couple of friends that I can recognize by the way their bodies move when they’re walking. Otherwise, hair, shoulders, what-have-you. Depends upon the person. Your list works for me.

Great post – thought provoking. I can often identify family members from behind and at a distance but more than once have discovered, upon closer proximity, that it was a different family member (ie. my brother-in-law not my husband or a different nephew than I’d thought).

I agree with Brenda ND – it’s the ‘ invisible connection pulling taut.’ Sometimes I recognize someone across the room and start reacting to their presence before I’ve mentally processed who it is.

I think a lot of those are just subconscious. I suspect that if I tried to identify someone by their body language, I’d fail miserably, but I know I do it all the time without thinking about it because I very often recognize people before I see their faces.

Maybe if I consciously tried to notice those things about people…
