Thursday Thirteen — July Fourth Fun

Before we get to the fun, please be sure to stop over at the Midnight Moon Cafe today and wish Tempest a happy birthday!

Now, onto business:

Thirteen ShapeShifter July 4 stories

1. When the band was in their struggling, pre-record deal days, they played a local show at Decade. Ten people showed up. Ten people left around 8:30 to get a good view of the fireworks in Riverview Park. The show started at 8.

2. The year they signed their record deal, ShapeShifter was invited to play the big Riverview Park festivities. Until one of the city councilmen heard their music and went on record as saying, “I don’t care if there’s a Voss in the band. That garbage isn’t polluting my July Fourth.”

3. A year or two after that, the band tried to play a bigger show. Again, no one bought tickets. They got paid their guarantee, but it didn’t feel much like a holiday.

4. Now, the band knows: either be in Europe where the Fourth isn’t a holiday at all and people will come out in droves to see you, or take the week off.

5. Mitchell prefers taking the week off. This is because he’s got a small love affair going with his grill. And what better holiday is there for grilling than the Fourth?

6. I’m sure many of you are expecting to hear how Trevor likes to go wild with the fireworks on the Fourth. Except… he doesn’t. After all, everyone does fireworks on the Fourth and his name is Trevor Wolff, thankyouverymuch. He’s not everybody.

7. Daniel, however, has no such qualms. If they make it, he’s tried it. Usually using Mitchell’s parents’ back yard as his launching pad.

8. He spends a lot of time making nice to the neighbors. It’s not totally necessary, but Sonya and Patterson insist on it. They’re big on doing the right thing, especially after those small fires that Daniel’s experiments started…

9. Mitchell tried using sparklers as lights so he could see the steaks on the grill. It wasn’t one of his better ideas. He got so busy trying to see what he was doing, he burned his fingers.

10. Guitar players plus burned fingers does NOT equal a good idea in anyone’s book. Except maybe for Kerri and Amy’s. But then, when those two get together, whatever happens usually finds Mitchell bearing the brunt of it.

11. Like the flowered apron that Amy managed to not only get over his head, but knotted so well that Mitchell finally took a steak knife to it in order to escape.

12. Of course, when you get four guys in a band together and add beer and a relaxed environment, you get one thing… a jam session.

13. All four guys get to apologize to the neighbors in the morning, including their friend the city councilman. Yeah, the one who didn’t want ShapeShifterly garbage polluting his July Fourth.

It sounds like after a rocky start, the ShapeShifter boys have found a nice way to celebrate. It IS independence day, after all. What better way to honor the day than by doing one’s own thing?

fun! love the apron! heehee!BR/BR/I can totally picture Daniel in the back yard with the fireworks… images of a friend of my friend’s husband shooting roman candles off angled over the roof and friend’s husband on the roof singing the star bangled banner come to mind… later on, friend’s husband’s brother comes back from the school parking lot where they had watched the fireworks saying “Some idiot was on singing really loud…” yeah, that was your brother… friend was not amused as she’d spent the whole evening trying to explain to them WHY they could not get on the roof to watch the fireworks, only to have her husband do it. *sigh* Life is never dull when her husband is around! 😉

Great list, mine is up at A HREF=”http://plancksconstant.org/blog1/2008/07/13_not_so_famous_last_words.html” REL=”nofollow”13 Not So Famous Last Words/A; Most Americans die peacefully in their beds, but for those who die violently one can only guess what their final words must have been. I think that after you read these you will have to agree that they do indeed sound like they might have been the last words of those who did not go peacefully into the night.

I’m with the guys – the fourth is for heading to the lake for swimming, skiing and a lot of eating and drinking. Not for gigs. Definitely take the week off.

As always, Trevor cracks me up. Reminds me of a former boyfriend who *refused* to go to Happy Hour after work on Fridays. He referred to Fridays alternately as “Amateur Night” and “Rat Fuck’s Night Out.” Of course, since my former boyfriend was a loser and a wannabe, I’m sure this is the ONLY quality he and Trevor share.BR/BR/Happy 4th to you and the boys in the band! (And thanks for the thoughtful comment on my TT)

So the band does hang out when not touring. Can you imagine being their neighbors. I think it’s time for them to get really rich and famous to own an expansive lot on the lake where they can jam and shoot off fireworks all night long.BR/BR/Hope you have a happy Fourth, enjoy good weather if you have it!

Ah, a grill man, that puts Mitchell up a little above Trevor for me now. I have got to take some time to read more of your stuff! I always look for to TT to find out more about your boys!BR/BR/One year while doing fireworks somehow my brother got some (accidentally I think) chasing my Granny!!!

  25. Wylie Kinson

    July 3, 2008 2:55 pm

Ah, #6 cracked me up. And Mitchell can come grill for me anytime. I’ll even hold his sparkler 😉

What is Riverview going to do for the 4th? Personally, I was thinking to go out to a beach in Pacifica to watch folks blow things up (from a safe distance…with a camera.)BR/BR/Oh! And if you would like to have some fun with Rogue Lemon. Have at. I doubt I’ll ever get around to it, and it would be fun to see them.BR/BR/Have a great fourth!

This post and the one about the pedal totally remind me of stories Rott has told me about Child Saint. Rott still had his roadie case (in great shape and still with pedals in it) up until a couple of years ago. Although, in our last condo, the 32 inch TV sat on the case because it had wheels and Rott could move it around if he wanted to. I guess I should really buy him a new guitar. *sigh*

Things can get a little crazy on the 4th. One year, a fire got set in my front yard by some fireworks – but we got it out. It just left a big burned spot.

A guitar player with burned fingers might develop a sparkler phobia.
